Introducing the PRIDE 2019 Collection— come and get your queer gear! PRIDE is making a fabulous comeback with five new retro inspired designs. As both LGBTQ+ community members and allies, the DNDL team is here to say: We’re here. We’re queer. Get used to it! This collection is an effort to honor those that came before us, celebrate those who are here now, and forge a more inclusive future for those who will come after us.
We will be donating a portion of the proceeds to the OUT Foundation, an organization that seeks to remove the barriers that block LGBTQ+ individuals access to and participation in health and wellness activities.
Step aside ABBA— the real dancing queens are the black and latinx LGBTQ voguers who perfected and popularized the voguing art form in 1980s Harlem. A playful yet combative display of agility and prowess, voguing originated as part of queer ballroom culture. Per the Smithsonian’s “A Brief History of Vogueing”…
“Through dance, drag queens showed how gender is a performance – they pretended to put on makeup or “beat face”, style their hair, and put on extravagant clothes. This creative performance through voguing was even used to peacefully settle disputes among rivals in an environment that assumed a degree of mutual respect and compassion. Using dance and pantomime, the voguers would “read” each other. Ultimately, the winner would be the person who ‘threw the best shade.’”
